Position: Defensive Tackle

2012 Season Stats: N/A (Out all season with an injury)
Prognostication: Derrick Mitchell is in a position to play a huge role in the upcoming season. In fact, he was about to play a big role in the 2012 season, but injuries derailed any opportunities he had at that. During spring practices Mitchell saw a ton of time with the first string line. Even if he doesn’t end up starting, worst case scenario calls for him seeing many snaps on the field as a rotational lineman. Either way he is expected to be vital to Florida State’s success on the defensive side of the football.
Strengths: Big, athletic for his size and a first step that could have landed him the lead role in Dirty Dancing. Derrick Mitchell’s abilities are there. Now it is just a matter of him putting it all together and being able to stay healthy. He is also a terrific student, which is something that goes widely unnoticed but is equally as important when talking about college players.
Weaknesses: Injury prone. That is the most accurate way to describe it. Since he’s been with the program Mitchell has visited the medical facilities more than his fair share amount of time. The actual weaknesses in his game, though, are pretty small. So the key to his success for the 2013 season comes down to staying healthy. After that, however, everything else would just fall in place.
Fairly random, but awesome, Derrick Mitchell factoid: Mitchell recorded 17.5 sacks as a senior in high school. Think about that for a second. An interior lineman recorded video game like statistics when rushing the quarterback.
